Gail
Hyer is an accomplished genealogist whose
research on her own family brought her to Pocahontas County many times
over the past five years. One day she decided the county was so charming
(and full of distant cousins) that she moved here and now resides
in Hillsboro.
Gail has worked as the Marketing Specialist for the Pocahontas County
Convention & Visitors Bureau since 2003 and as such photographs
and writes about the amazing sights, sounds, and people of Pocahontas
County. Marketing these mountains is an easy job says Hyer. The intrinsic
beauty sells itself, and the people are warm and welcoming.
Her appreciation of historical preservation has resulted in her leading
the effort to digitize and preserve documents in the county. Everything
from local government court records to family Bibles and early railroad
records are included in a special 3-year program she champions with
the assistance of the Genealogy Group, the Pocahontas County Free
Libraries, and the Historical Society. Being a student and admirer
of Pearl S. Buck, she was delighted when she was recently asked to
serve on the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace Foundation's board of directors.
